Our Story

GRAINN started with a pile of offcuts.

We run a small woodworking business, and every project left behind these little scraps of plywood that were too small to use for anything and too nice to bin. They sat in a box for months. Eventually we started cutting shapes out of them, mostly to see what would happen.

Turns out what happens is earrings.

We've since outgrown the offcut pile, so the wood is bought properly now. Basswood plywood, packaging that recycles.

Everything we make is designed around what the wood will actually allow. Ten millimetres doesn't give you much room, so we keep the shapes bold and simple, the kind you can read properly from across a room. Every pair gets cut, sanded, and hand-painted here in the UK, then finished with 316L stainless steel posts so they're kind to most ears.

The designs are a bit odd on purpose. Capybaras, floppy disks, mushrooms, a rocket ship. The idea was that everyone should be able to find something that feels like theirs, whether that's a dog you recognise, a bit of nineties nostalgia, or a mushroom. There's a lot of ground to cover and we're still adding to it.

Because the wood is natural and the painting is done by hand, no two pairs come out identical. Slight variations in grain and colour are part of it. We think that's better than perfect.

Thanks for being here.
